Are "Box-Type Substation" and "Prefabricated Substation" the Same Thing?

Definition and Terminology in Export Transformer Projects

What buyers usually mean by “box-type substation”

“Box-type substation” is a general commercial name for an outdoor power unit housed in a cabinet or box enclosure. It integrates high-voltage switchgear, a distribution transformer, and low-voltage distribution equipment in one package. On Xinda’s foreign-trade site, the terminology appears across several product lines: YBP series is described as “box-type substation” with European-style three-compartment layout, ZGS series is described as American-style box substation, and modular/ZGS11 pages use “box transformer substation” for cable-network distribution.

The name focuses on the outdoor box form. It does not by itself define voltage class, protection scheme, transformer type, or applicable standard.

What “prefabricated substation” emphasizes

“Prefabricated substation” describes how the unit is delivered: high-voltage equipment, transformer, and low-voltage apparatus are assembled, wired, and tested in the factory according to a predetermined scheme, then shipped for foundation fixing and cable connection on site. Xinda’s YB-12 European-style prefabricated compact substation is presented as a unit combining medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, and low-voltage electrical apparatus, compliant with GB/T 17467 “High-voltage/Low-voltage Prefabricated Substations” and SD320 technical conditions for compact substations.

Metal-clad prefabricated substation and YBP box-type substation pages use the same delivery logic: factory assembly, short on-site installation period, and complete HV/LV/transformer integration. Therefore, “prefabricated” is more about engineering and logistics; “box-type” is more about enclosure style and market naming.

Structural Differences by Product Style

European-style prefabricated units: YB-12 and YBP

YB-12 prefabricated compact substation is designed for 12 kV, 50 Hz three-phase AC systems, with capacity configurations up to 1600 kVA in the product page. It uses separate high-voltage, transformer, and low-voltage compartments, suitable for residential communities, commercial buildings, industrial and mining enterprises, high-tech zones, and temporary sites. The page states ring-main and radial terminal supply are both supported.

YBP series box-type substation uses an I-shape or triangle-shape compartment structure with independent high-voltage room, transformer room, and low-voltage room. The product material lists model YBP-12/0.4, HV 12 kV, LV 0.4 kV, capacity range stated as customizable from 10 kVA to 5000 kVA, and separate IP grades for HV, transformer, and LV rooms. It is positioned as a factory-prefabricated replacement for traditional civil substations.

Both are “prefabricated” and can be called “box-type,” but YBP marketing uses “box-type” more explicitly, while YB-12 marketing uses “prefabricated compact substation” more explicitly.

American-style integrated units: ZGS series

ZGS combined substation is described as American-style box substation with high-voltage switch unit, transformer unit, and low-voltage distribution unit integrated into a sealed corrugated oil tank. The product page states compliance with GB/T 17467-2018 and IEC 62271-200, HV 10 kV as standard with 6 kV/35 kV customizable, LV 0.4 kV, capacities from 50 kVA to 2000 kVA, sealed oil-immersed transformer, oil-immersed two-position/three-position load switch, plug-in dual-sensitive fuse plus backup current-limiting fuse, and IP54 protection degree.

Compared with European-style YB/YBP, ZGS reduces separate cabinet space by immersing HV live parts in transformer oil. In export inquiries, it is still a “box-type” unit, but the prefabrication method and maintenance access are different.

Metal-clad and custom enclosure packages

Xinda’s metal-clad prefabricated substation uses channel-steel base and angle-steel frame, with double-layer composite-panel shell and optional stainless steel, aluminum-zinc alloy, aluminum alloy, cold-rolled steel, or color steel plate. The technical table lists 7.2/12 kV high voltage, 6/0.4 or 10/0.4 transformer voltage options, 0.4 kV low voltage, oil-immersed or dry-type transformer options, and IP23D overall protection grade in the published parameter sheet.

This shows that “prefabricated substation” is not limited to one box style. The enclosure material, frame type, and compartment layout should be specified by application, not by the generic “box” name.

Standards, Factory Assembly, and Testing Scope

Standards referenced in Xinda product documentation

For tender writing, use the standard actually quoted in the product document:

  • YB-12 European-style prefabricated compact substation: GB/T 17467 “High-voltage/Low-voltage Prefabricated Substations” and SD320 “Technical Conditions for Compact Substations”
  • ZGS American-style combined substation: GB/T 17467-2018 and IEC 62271-200
  • General export MV/HV packages: IEC 62271 series for switchgear, IEC 60076 series for transformers, and IEC 61439 for low-voltage assemblies may be added according to project specification; these are not stated on every Xinda substation page and should be confirmed per inquiry.

Do not assume CE, KEMA, or utility-type-test certificates without requesting the exact report for the ordered model and voltage.

Factory prefabrication vs on-site civil work

Xinda’s substation pages describe factory assembly of HV, transformer, and LV equipment, with on-site work limited to foundation fixing, cable termination, inspection, and energization. YBP material states that all components are assembled, insulated, and tested in the factory and only need power connection on site. YB-12 material states reduced on-site installation work and short installation/commissioning cycles.

By contrast, a traditional civil substation procures transformer, MV switchgear, LV switchgear, busway/cables, and building works separately. “Prefabricated” mainly reduces site coordination; it does not automatically mean higher quality or lower cost in every project.

Application Selection: When the Name Matters Less Than Configuration

Urban, residential, and commercial distribution

YB-12 is listed for urban high-rise buildings, urban/rural construction, villas, parks, residential communities, high-tech zones, small-to-medium factories, mining/oil fields, and temporary sites. For export bids, specify ring-network or radial-terminal incoming, HV load switch or vacuum circuit breaker, transformer oil/dry type, LV GGD/withdrawable type, metering, and reactive compensation.

ZGS is listed for old residential renovation, industrial parks, temporary construction, PV/wind grid connection, and rural grid upgrade, where fully sealed, compact, and maintenance-light design is preferred.

Industrial, mining, port, and harsh-environment projects

YBP product material lists urban civil buildings, industrial parks, mines, construction sites, metallurgical/chemical bases, roads, parking, subway, airport, port, scenic areas, and coastal salt-fog applications. Metal-clad material lists stainless steel, aluminum-zinc alloy, aluminum alloy, cold-rolled steel, or color steel with flame-retardant thermal insulation, and gives altitude, temperature, wind, humidity, and seismic reference values for custom conditions.

For these projects, the buyer should not ask only “box or prefabricated.” The technical inquiry should state enclosure material, corrosion class, ventilation/heating, IP grade, transformer cooling, and HV/LV protection rather than the marketing name.

Utility-scale and higher-voltage packages

Xinda’s Chinese site states the company can manufacture 220 kV and below transformers, with 10 kV/35 kV/110 kV/220 kV oil-immersed products, 10 kV dry-type and amorphous products, and complete HV/LV switchgear including KYN61-40.5, KYN28A-12, HXGN-12, XGN2-12, GCK/GCS/MNS/GGD and DFW-10/630 cable branch boxes. For 110 kV/220 kV incoming projects, a “box-type” label is usually insufficient; the package should be specified as prefabricated substation, GIS/AIS switchyard, or conventional substation according to utility standard.

Xinda Product Mapping for Overseas Buyers

  • American-style, fully sealed oil tank, 10/0.4 standard: request “ZGS combined substation” and confirm fuse/load-switch scheme, cable elbow type, and IP54 enclosure.
  • Custom steel/composite enclosure, industrial/municipal: request “metal-clad prefabricated substation” and confirm frame, panel, HVAC, and LV/MV component brands.
  • Complete package with Xinda transformer + switchgear: reference oil-immersed 10/35/110/220 kV, dry-type SC(B)10/SG(B)10, amorphous SBH/SCBH, special rectifier/furnace units, and HV/LV switchgear from the product list.
Inquiry data sheet to avoid name confusion

To receive an accurate quotation, send rated HV/LV voltage, frequency, system earthing, required kVA, vector group, tap range if OLTC/off-circuit, transformer type oil/dry/amorphous, HV scheme load switch/circuit breaker/ring main, LV scheme GGD/withdrawable/metering/compensation, enclosure material and IP, ambient temperature/altitude/corrosion/wind, communication protocol Modbus/IEC 60870/61850 if required, standards IEC/GB/GOST/local grid, and factory acceptance test list. This prevents the supplier from quoting a generic “box” that does not match site duty.

In short, “box-type substation” and “prefabricated substation” overlap but are not interchangeable technical terms: most modern box units are prefabricated, but “prefabricated” covers a broader delivery method, while “box-type” may refer to European, American, metal-clad, or customized enclosure designs with different HV/LV/transformer integration.
